Healthy Caribbean Coalition - FDA consultation on reducing sodium in food

As you may already know The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) in the United States are launching efforts to identify opportunities to reduce sodium in food in order to put more control into consumers' hands. There will be a public meeting to provide interested persons an opportunity to discuss sodium reduction. It is an opportunity for individuals to actively express their views by making presentations at the meeting, participating in breakout sessions, and submitting written comments to the designated docket(s) by November 29, 2011. It is absolutely essential that WASH members, where possible, submit comments in support of salt reduction to counter the aggressive input from the Salt Institute. A breakthrough on salt reduction in the US will have great implications for salt reduction efforts worldwide.

WASH will be submitting comments on the following:

  • Why the FDA should ignore lobbying by the food industry and salt institute
  • The strength and diversity of the evidence
  • The success of the UK strategy including consumer response
  • Food safety & functionality
  • Research & results on consumer awareness

Example of what WASH members can do:

  • Evidence of successful salt/sodium reduction strategies in place or in progress in your country
  • E.g. South Africa may wish to provide information on new legislative salt targets
  • Portugal on legislative bread targets
  • PAHO on recent initiatives and countries signing up to take action
  • China on policy development
  • Examples of food technology initiatives to reduce salt/sodium
  • Consumer responses – food labeling – allowing consumers to make more informed choices.

The Salt Institute are lobbying intensively – as you can see from their website and Facebook page. We should do all we can to counter this – after all, we are the experts!
