HCC addresses the importance of the Telecommunications industry in combating NCDsHCC addresses the importance of the Telecommunications industry in combating NCDs: Dr. Lynda Williams, HCC Physician Volunteer, presented on ‘Telecommunications: a powerful partner in combating NCDs’ on behalf of Professor Trevor Hassell at the Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on SIDS side event: Towards sustainable development of SIDS: addressing the threat of Non Commmunicable Diseaes. The Caribbean Community collaborated with the World Health Organization, and the Pan American Health Organization to hold a side event to this meeting titled “Towards sustainable development of SIDS: addressing the threat of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs)”. The objectives of the event were to:

  • Assert the urgent need to include NCDs in the sustainable development agenda of SIDS and the global post 2015 development agenda
  • Highlight the benefits for health from actions to combat climate change
  • Share experiences and best practices in SIDS to align policies across a range of development sectors for the prevention and control of NCDs, particular in relation to reducing the risk factors.

The highly distinguished panel of speakers moderated by The Hon. John D.E. Boyce, Minister of Health of Barbados, included Dr. James Hospedales, Executive Director of CARPHA; Dr. Maria Neira, Assistant Director General, Sustainable Development, WHO; Hon. Tuitama Dr. Leao Talalelei Tuitama, Minister for Health, Samoa; and Mr. Navin Chanderpal, Advisor to the President on Sustainable Development, Guyana.
