Dr. James Hospedales

The Directors, staff, volunteers and member organizations of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC) warmly congratulate Dr. James Hospedales on his recent appointment as Director of the newly created Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), which provides a collective response to public health challenges for residents and visitors in the Caribbean, began formal operations on January 1, 2013. CARPHA will serve as the lead agency for coordinating pan-Caribbean action in areas including disease surveillance, development of human resources for health, emergency preparedness and response, health promotion and communication, and policy development. Based in Trinidad and Tobago, it will house a regional laboratory and coordinate a network of laboratories in other Caribbean countries as well.

The HCC has had a longstanding relationship with Dr. Hospedales in his capacity as Senior Advisor & Coordinator, Prevention & Control of Chronic Diseases at PAHO and as Special Advisor to the Healthy Caribbean Coalition.

We wish the new Director every success in this new post and commit to working closely with CARPHA to ensure a civil society-centered, 'whole-of-society approach' to the Caribbean regional public health response.
