HCC Congratulates the Medical Association of Jamaica

MAJ Medical SymposiumThe Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ), which will celebrate its Golden Jubilee next year, recently launched "Healthy Population Campaign" which will target obesity reduction and increased physical activity in the first instance. The President of the MAJ, Dr. Shane Alexis, in recent correspondence with the HCC indicated that “the MAJ hoped to be able to successfully promote and educate participants on healthy practices in MAJ seminars with one of the objectives being to reduce the instances and possible complications of NCD's in Jamaica”. The MAJ recently held a very successful Medical Symposium 1-8 June and the programme of that symposium can be downloaded. here.

African Caribbean Cancer Consortium (AC3) to study tocabacco related cancersThe American Cancer Society has awrded Dr. Camille Ragin founding member of the AC3 a grant to to evaluate genetic susceptibility to tobacco smoke among Black individuals. Focusing on whether Black persons metabolize tobacco at a lower efficiency due to genetics, therefore if they are exposed which could ultimately predispose them to tobacco related cancers, specifically head and neck cancers. Long-term Care Guidelines for Prostate Cancer Survivors - To help primary care doctors and prostate cancer survivors better manage prostate survivors’ long-term care, the American Cancer Society has released its first ever Prostate Cancer Survivorship Care Guidelines, published June 10, 2014 in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. These newly developed guidelines provide detailed recommendations around nutrition and physical activity, cancer testing, management of side effects, and coordination of care among primary care doctors and specialists. The HCC is a regional network of Caribbean health NGOs and civil society organizations with the remit to combat chronic diseases (NCDs) and their associated risk factors and conditions. Our membership presently consists of more than 50 Caribbean-based health NGOs and over 55 not-for-profit organisations and, in excess of 200 individual members based in the Caribbean and across the globe.
